School ANZAC Day Ceremony – April 30

The school service was conducted by the students with our school captains Amy Steven and Alana Buffett leading the proceedings.

Year 5 students recited the poem “In Flanders Field” and Jack Robertson from Year 10 gave an outstanding address on the significance of the ANZAC ceremony.

Our ANZAC ceremony this year was also a special one as our new ANZAC memorial was unveiled and consecrated. RSL President, Warren Finch spoke on the background and significance of the school memorial. Captain Rod Oldfield offered a prayer of blessing and Mrs Deloras Wotherspoon and Mr Kik Quintal laid a wreath.

The school would like to express our extreme gratitude to the Norfolk Island RSL for their donation of the memorial to our school.

Road Traffic Handbook – Youth Assembly

For a number of years, the Road Traffic Handbook has been out of date and amendments have been made by hand. Progressively, the amendments have become more significant and in some instances, have been incomplete.

In 2008, a Norfolk Island Youth Assembly member who was preparing to get her Driver's Permit was so disappointed in the Handbook, that she moved that the Youth Assembly make it a project to correct the inaccuracies and create a digital version of the Handbook that could be available on the Government website and could be easily updated.

The Project has been completed in conjunction with the Norfolk Island Police and with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

Youth Assembly members hope that the Handbook will be regularly maintained and that copies will be available to any person preparing to obtain a Driver's Licence, via the Norfolk Island Government website, the Norfolk Island Central School website or as a .pdf file from the Norfolk Island Police.

Defence Forces Visit – June 19

Representatives of the armed forces visited the school to discuss careers in the armed forces with interested students.  Students in Years 9-12 were given the opportunity to attend. The recruitment team arrived by a Hercules C130 aircraft.

Following the talks the students travelled by bus to the airport to inspect the aircraft.

For well over an hour our students were able to inspect the aircraft. The cockpit, of course, was the most popular section of the plane. All the aircrew were very happy to explain their roles on the aircraft. This gave our students a great opportunity to ask further questions in relation to possible career paths.

Careers Market – June 25

Our Careers Market was a great success and a large number of representatives from employer groups, professions and tertiary institutions came to talk to, and share their employment experiences with, our students.

A special thanks to Maxine Hughes from Griffith University Queensland, and Rod Varnham from Queensland TAFE for coming over for the Careers Market. They were kept very busy interviewing students and parents about prospective courses of study in 2010.

All the students who attended were very appreciative to receive the information and to be able to ask questions about careers that they are interested in.

Cross Country – June 17

Despite the forecast of wind and showers the weather remained perfect for our Cross Country Carnival.

The competition was very keen and Norfolk emerged as the victorious House. This makes it a Swimming Carnival, Cross Country Carnival double for Norfolk this year. Members of Nepean and Philip Houses need to start training for the Athletics Carnival soon if they wish to stop Norfolk from winning all three carnivals. House Points were: Norfolk: 2983, Nepean 2747, Philip 2661

Bike Safety Day – July 2

The Norfolk Island Police visited the school to run a Bike Safety Program for Years 1 – 4 students. We must have nearly set a school record for the number of bikes at the school in a single day. All the students enjoyed the session and gained some very important information on road rules and safe riding

Special thanks must go to Sergeant Ed; Special Constable Tim; Jason from Land & Sea; Daryl and Mathew from the Works Depot; Parent Helpers Eve & Amanda; Mr Thompson and the SLR class; Suzanne for her organisation and Bianca.
