Watawieh and welcome to the Norfolk Island Central School website. We are very proud of our school community and invite you to browse the site to find out more about this unique environment in which we live. Norfolk Island lies 1,676km East North East of Sydney and 960km North West of Auckland. It is 8km long and 5km wide. Approximately 2000 people reside on the island, a mixture of those of Pitcairn descent, Australians, New Zealanders and a small percentage of other nationalities. |
Many island
families can trace their roots back to the mutineers from HMS Bounty who settled on Pitcairn Island with their
Tahitian partners to avoid capture by the British. It is
indeed a place rich in glorious, and at times, gory
history relating back to previous convict settlements.
Our school is a Central School catering to approximately
320 students from Kindergarten to Year 12. The Norfolk
Island Government purchases an educational package from
the NSWDET, which includes staff who are recruited under
the NSWDET merit selection process.
Norfolk Island Central School has a proud tradition and
heritage and both the island government and local
community take a keen interest in educational matters. We
enjoy wonderful support from our parents, who are active
participants in many school programs and initiatives.
The school celebrates its centenary on the current site at
Middlegate in 2006, although compulsory education actually
began on Norfolk in July 1856, a mere month after the
arrival of the Pitcairn Islanders on 6 June. 70 children
met in the New Military Barracks on 14 July 1856 to begin
lessons with George Hunn Nobbs, the island’s first
schoolmaster, and his 2 assistant teachers. We’ve come a
long way since then and now have approximately 320
students working with computer technology.
A special thank you must be given to our Marine Studies
teacher Simon, who has put our website together so
professionally, to his wife Alicia who has been of great
help and other staff who have contributed to this project.
Sit back and relax while you wander through our website
and perhaps you will gain some insight into why we are so
proud of the school and the students at NICS.
